At Apollo Wholistic Living we treat various ailments holistically just to name a few below:
How does Holistic Medicine work?
Holistic medicine looks at bringing your body back to balance by treating the whole person. It needs diagnostic and therapeutic tools to examine and balance the physical, nutritional, environmental, psychological, emotional, social, and spiritual levels of health. Holistic medicine entails a combination of various modalities including clinical nutrition, detoxification, energy medicine, naturopathic medicine, herbal medicine, homeopathy, hair tissue analysis, and many more to diagnose and treat patients. The wonderful field of natural medicine has been around for thousands of years.
The goal of Holistic medicine is to use all diagnostic and treatment modalities available to optimize the health of the person on all levels of well-being, without harming the person. It is the optimization of all resources to bring about a cure in the person, no matter what school or modality they belong to. Holistic medicine treats symptoms but also looks for UNDERLYING CAUSES of the symptoms. In other words, Holistic medicine looks at the whole iceberg effect (Figure 1). The PRIMARY GOAL is to determine and treat the underlying cause rather than simply manage or suppress the symptoms. The underlying cause may be due to diet, lifestyle habits, life events, posture, or environment. Symptoms are viewed as expressions of the body’s natural attempt to heal. Figure 2 below illustrates some causative factors of disease.
Your Naturopathic and Holistic Doctor works to restore and support the powerful and inherent healing ability of your body, mind, and spirit and to prevent further disease from occurring. The Naturopathic and Holistic Doctor will help identify and remove obstacles to recovery, facilitating and augmenting this ordered and intelligent healing ability.
With the iceberg analogy, we see that just like the iceberg in its entirety is composed of the 10% above the waterline, PLUS the 90% below the waterline, so is man composed of many different levels, some we can see and measure and some we cannot. However, they all interact to determine whether we are healthy or not – all these levels make up the HOLISTIC MODEL OF HEALTH. The tip of the iceberg represents the physical and chemical composition of the body. When the focus of the person is on the tip of the iceberg, ignoring the other 90% below the waterline. It’s like looking at an entire tree and only focusing on one area but missing the real culprit, which is in the forest! Below is just a brief overview of some of these factors.
Nutrition and Health
We eat to nourish all our cells with vital nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, trace elements, amino acids, fats, and phytonutrients. We all know that nutrition plays an imperative role in health – you have all probably heard the saying “We are what we eat” – well, you better believe it! Therefore, the foods that we choose to eat should be nutrient-dense, and rich in nutrients, not ones that are empty and deficient.
If any part of your body is deficient in the numerous nutrients that it requires daily to function, then it is only a matter of time before symptoms appear. The body cannot build enzymes, hormones, blood, muscles, and immune responses, let alone detoxify itself without many of the vitamins, minerals, trace elements, and more that it requires. It is like a builder trying to build a house without bricks, or cement – the result would be defective and most likely dangerous. With the right food, we do not need medicine. Food is medicine because food is information, and what we eat can have profound effects on our physical body.
There is also another emerging science that explores the effects of certain foods on health – it is now well-known that certain individuals react adversely to particular foods. This is the embryonic science of Food Intolerance or Allergies. These masked food allergies cause the body to produce inflammatory chemicals – which will no doubt create further symptoms and imbalances.
Man is made up of electromagnetic waves and other particles that all resonate at set frequencies. Each group of cells emitted frequencies specific to its organ or tissue of origin. Cancerous cells emit a different, abnormal pattern. Harmful factors such as faulty nutrition, environmental pollutants containing toxic chemicals or heavy metals, bacteria, or viruses, weaken and distort cellular electromagnetic fields before the onset of illness and death. The healing power of touch and energy dates back to Hippocrates, the Greek physician and father of modern medicine.
The Psycho-Emotional Person
We all know that chronic stress can cause heart disease, including hypertension and strokes; a compromised immune system which can lead to infections, allergies, or even cancer; and gastrointestinal conditions such as ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome. Many “sudden deaths” that we hear about even in young people, are probably caused mainly by either acute shock or chronic stress. The American Institute of Stress reports that 75 to 90 percent of all visits to health-care providers result from stress-related disorders. There are over 1,400 chemical reactions that occur in our bodies as a result of stress. Three key stress hormones support our bodies in emergencies: adrenaline, aldosterone, and cortisol. Stress not only causes physical changes in our bodies, but it also causes emotional and mental changes. Stress affects our ability to relax and sleep, and when we feel as though we cannot cope with all of the items on our agenda, stress even affects our self-esteem.
Stress is not the situation; it is your mental and emotional reactions to the situation. We may not be able to change various aspects of our environment, but we can change how we react to, and perceive our environment. If you find yourself experiencing negative thoughts and having negative emotions, it is important to know how to shift your thoughts, thereby shifting the consequences of the stress hormones. Research has shown that people who generally have positive thoughts—the optimists of the world—have increased longevity. Positive emotions reduce morbidity from various diseases, and they result in us having more cognitive flexibility—and more creativity.
When it comes to mental well-being, micronutrients, including vitamins and minerals, appear to be equally as important as macronutrients such as the proteins and fats that are found in the foods that we eat.
Man and the Environment
Man interacts with the environment daily, and it is getting tougher and tougher to avoid toxins, radioactive fallout, electromagnetic radiation, microwaves from mobile phones, geopathic stress, and much more. All these factors, if we are exposed to them for long enough, can be very detrimental to our health. This is why it is important to detoxify our bodies regularly.
Holistic Health teaches the person to reach and maintain higher levels of wellness, optimizing health as well as preventing illness. People generally enjoy the vitality and well-being that result from their positive lifestyle changes, and this motivates them to continue this process throughout their lives.
In Holistic Medicine the healthcare professional and the patient work as partners – this is the only way to succeed as healing is not only related to the Naturopathic and Holistic Doctor but the willingness of the patient to work together with the Naturopathic and Holistic Doctor and implement their bespoke healing program. Rather than just eliminating or masking symptoms, the symptom is used as a guide to look below the surface for the root cause. Whenever possible, treatments are selected that support the body’s natural healing system.
